Exhibition Tours

Join Collections Manager Rosalinda Hardiman for an introductory tour of the exhibition A Hard Choice.  Learn some of the stories behind the objects on show and Rosalinda’s reasons for selecting them.

Tours last approximately 45 minutes.

Sunday 19th April

Back to the Future Charity Event

Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cult science fiction comedy film Back to the Future and raise money for the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at a special event organised by The Hill Valley Preservation Society.   See costumes and props from the 1985 film and its two sequels including Marty McFly's 2015 size adjusting jacket, Valterra skateboard, JVC camcorder, Nike trainers and other iconic objects.  You could even win some fantastic Back to the Future themed items in the Society's charity raffle.

The event complements a small Back to the Future display, on show at Portsmouth Museum until 17 May.

Object handling master class with Collections Manager Rosalinda Hardiman

Gain hands-on access to a range of objects from the collections of Portsmouth Museums and learn how to handle them safely.  Use your new skills at home to safeguard your own treasures and prevent costly and upsetting mishaps.

Valuing the Vintage: caring for textiles past and present

Meet Sarah Howard, a textile conservator and specialist in the care of historic dress.  Learn how museums care for textiles in their collections and share Sarah's top tips on how to look after vintage textiles in the home.  You are invited to bring along your own textile items such as samplers, wedding dresses, christening robes and vintage fashions for specific advice.

My Favourite Things - family activities with Writer in Residence Aoife Mannix

Children and their families are invited to join Writer in Residence Aoife Mannix for a range of fun filled activities inspired by the intriguing objects on display in A Hard Choice.  Create your own collection of favourite things using words and pictures.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Creative Writing Workshop for Adults

Work with Portsmouth Museum's Writer in Residence, Aoife Mannix to use the fascinating objects on show in A Hard Choice as the starting point for writing inspired by the joy of collecting.  The workshop will be fun and practical and no previous writing experience is necessary.  Further workshops will run on Friday 26 June, 2.00 - 4.00pm and Sunday 28 June, 10.30am - 12.30pm.  You are welcome to join us for one or more sessions.  Why not book for all three to see how your writing develops?

Taxidermy Talk and Demonstration

Meet Jazmine Miles-Long, an ethical taxidermist who only works with birds and animals that have died from natural causes.  Discover the processes involved in the strange and fascinating craft of taxidermy and watch as Jazmine demonstrates some of the techniques she uses to create work for artists, collectors and museums.

What questions should you ask to ensure that you receive the right advice when you take your treasured pictures to a framer?  Philip Poole of Bespoke Picture Framing Fareham will talk you through the process and introduce some of the options available to you in terms of frames, mounts and glass.
