I saw my voice - writing for well-being with Maggie Sawkins

Are you interested in working with a writer to help you find your voice? Join award winning poet Maggie Sawkins for a series of creative writing workshops inspired by Edward King's paintings of 1940s Portsmouth.
The  six sessions will be relaxed and supportive as Maggie takes you through warm-ups and exercises to stimulate your imagination and get your words flowing.
Maggie Sawkins teaches in community and health care settings. Her work is widely published and she is the winner of the 2013 Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. Find out more at www.hookedonwords.me/

Family activities with Southsea Wildlife Watch

Fun wildlife-themed games and activities for children aged 5 - 14.  All children must be accompanied by an adult and adults are encouraged to join in.
The session may include a visit to the gardens behind the museum so please wrap up warmly and wear sturdy shoes or wellies.

10am - 12noon

Cost: £4 donation per child.  Booking not required but places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Saturday 11th February

Edward King & St James' - mental health care in Portsmouth 1926 to 1951
A talk by Christine Lawrence

In 1926 the artist Edward King was admitted to St James' Hospital, previously known as the Borough of Portsmouth Lunatic Asylum.  He remained there until his death in 1951.  Christine Lawrence worked as a psychiatric nurse for over 40 years.  Drawing on her experience of working at St James' Hospital in Portsmouth and Knowle Hospital in Fareham she will talk about Edward King's life as a patient at St James'.

Edward King's paintings of the grounds and outbuildings at St James', the houseboats at Milton Locks and Portsmouth during the Blitz will be available for viewing before and after the talk.

12noon - 1.30pm

Cost: Free.  No need to book, just turn up.
